Don Jirschele, a legendary Clintonville sports figure who played for Paul “Bear” Bryant at the University of Kentucky and signed a contract to try out for the Green Bay Packers, has died.
Jirschele, 87, died July 22 at Rennes Health and Rehabilitation Center in De Pere. His funeral is Tuesday at St. Rose Catholic Church in Clintonville.
While Jirschele was a star athlete, he was best known in this small community for his work in promoting local sports, especially baseball. He established the Clintonville Athletics organization, and the baseball field in the city’s downtown area is named in his honor.
