Ken Bokhoven began coaching at Grand Rapids Christian even before there was a Grand Rapids Christian.
Bokhoven was hired as an assistant track and field coach in 1962 at Central Christian, which eventually merged with East Christian to become Christian High School.
And coaching is what Bokhoven has been doing for the past 58 years.
Bokhoven, who mostly coached track and boys golf, coached 89 seasons in all. He won state championships and served as the school’s athletic director, and even when he was suffering from health issues, he never stopped serving the student-athletes at Christian.
On Monday, Bokhoven, 80, announced that he is retiring from coaching boys golf, bringing his career to a conclusion. He said it was no easy decision.
“It was not a snap decision at all,” Bokhoven said. “It was a number of small factors, including COVID-19. I have to be a little careful because I have had a heart attack and small bout with cancer.
